Shirt Box in Farmington Hills teams up with men’s magazine STAND

Alton Brown. Teddy Roosevelt. Winston Churchill. Charles Osgood. Bill Nye. All men known for wearing bow ties — but also known for much more than their sense of style. They are the kind of men that STAND Magazine caters to — men who give a damn.

The publication is hosting a release party to celebrate STAND Magazine Issue 05 and the public (of all genders) is invited to join in the festivities. The event will be Thursday, April 20, at the Shirt Box in Farmington Hills and will include food from Le Crepe in Royal Oak and drinks from Farmington Brewing Company, along with door prizes. The Shirt Box also is offering a 10 percent discount on purchases made during the party.

They will also offer a lesson on how to tie a bow tie.

Founder and Editor in Chief Dwayne Hayes looks at the party as a chance to connect with the public and also partner with The Shirt Box to provide a service to current and potential readers of STAND Magazine.

Store owners Ron Elkus and Rod Brown have offered style advice to readers online in the past and "we wanted to provide an opportunity to meet them, see the great offerings in the store, and get some personalized style advice," Hayes says of the upcoming event.

Elkus promises it will be a relaxed environment, so even men who don't like to shop can feel comfortable stopping by.

The store carries everything from shirts and ties to sweaters and sportswear. With 35 years of providing top notch service to customers as a modern-day haberdashery, it made sense for The Shirt Box to pair up with the publication, co-owner Elkus explains.

"We love to support other independent businesses and that's what Dwayne is. He's doing this on his own, out there hustling, we're hustling. We believe in being very community minded," he says.

Since STAND bills itself as a "men's lifestyle magazine for men who not only want to look good and feel great, but also do right," this particular pairing of small businesses is just a good fit, he says.

• The release party for STAND Magazine Issue 05 is Thursday, April 20, at The Shirt Box, 32500 Northwestern Hwy., Farmington Hills. Refreshments will be provided from 6-8 p.m. by Le Crepe Royal Oak and Farmington Brewing Company. RSVP at bit.ly/2oiYBIi.
